Meta's head of AI research stepping down

Joelle Pineau, the head of Meta's artificial intelligence research division, has announced her intention to step down, leaving a prominent role amid fierce competition in AI technology development. Pineau, who serves as Meta's vice president for AI research, stated on Tuesday that she will depart at the end of May after eight years with the company. In a social media post, she expressed, "As the world experiences significant change and the race for AI intensifies, it is time to make room for others to continue this important work as Meta embarks on its next chapter." Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding her departure, and Pineau did not name a successor. Based in Montreal, where she is also a computer science professor at McGill University, Pineau has been a key advocate for Meta's "open-source" strategy in AI development, exemplified by its flagship large language model, Llama, which features publicly available core components for others to utilize or adapt. Her announcement precedes the upcoming launch of a new AI conference, LlamaCon, scheduled for April 29. In 2023, she took the helm of Meta's AI research division, previously known as Facebook AI Research, which was established a decade ago by a team that included renowned AI researcher Yann LeCun. Although LeCun stepped down as director in 2018, he continues to serve as Meta's chief AI scientist.
